Communications and Media Relations Specialist - Writer Job Openings - Richmond VA

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in public relations, communications, journalism, or related field required. Extensive writing experience required, education field preferred. Writing samples required. Bilingual to include Spanish preferred. Excellent organizational skills, including keen attention to detail; the ability to learn quickly, work in a fast-paced environment and multi-task effectively. Outstanding interpersonal and team working skills.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS: Serves as primary writer for major Richmond Public Schools (RPS) publications, and scripts for various RPS campaigns and multimedia projects. Writes and edits press releases, media advisories, fact sheets, statements, op-eds and other news-related information. Develops talking points and briefings for Superintendent and leadership team. Assists with developing internal and external messaging aligned with the RPS brand, mission, and vision. Ensures that all RPS content is consistent in terms of message and tone, across all platforms and publications. Maintains relationships and awareness throughout RPS to support telling the RPS story. Remains current on issues impacting and policies governing the school district, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), public education legislation (local, regional, and national), and the city of Richmond. Performs other related duties as assigned.

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK: This position primarily serves as a writer informing and engaging stakeholders in strategic communication that showcases the school district’s value and impact. Work requires frequent standing, sitting, light lifting up to 10 pounds, walking, vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas, hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level, and visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data.
