The Interpretive Programs Assistant contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society (“CZS”) by engaging guests and providing informative and innovative education to increase guests’ appreciation of animals and nature and to contribute to providing an extraordinary guest experience. This position supports specific strategic CZS strategic initiatives including the Communities and Nature Program. The basic function of this position is primarily to narrate daily dolphins in action presentations and to assist the Interpretive Program Manager in the development and implementation of aspects of the Communities and Nature program.

The primary duties and responsibilities include:

  • Narrate the daily Dolphins in Action presentations. Provide interpretive presentations such as daily Zoo Chats throughout the park as needed.
  • Work with Interpretive Programs Manager in the planning, coordination and implementation of aspects of the CZS Communities and Nature Program. This includes being a liaison between CZS and partnering communities and implementing programs within partner communities. Develop and implement appropriate on-site and off-site outreach events.
  • Plan, prepare, and conduct animal-related, nature-based, and/or informal science programs that provide guests the opportunity to connect with wildlife and nature and understand the Society’s dedication to quality animal care and welfare.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Position Requirements and Specifications

This position includes the following requirements:

  • Two years of college coursework or an equivalent work experience in an informal educational setting, ideally in a zoo, aquarium, or nature center providing quality interpretive experiences.

  • Six months experience or equivalent performing animal or similar presentations.

  • English fluency required. Must be able to read, write, speak and comprehend at an intermediate level.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills required.

  • Must be comfortable speaking in front of the public and using a microphone.

  • Must be outgoing and able to work independently with little supervision.

  • Must be able to work with a variety of invertebrates, including arachnids, crustaceans and insects, as well as reptiles, amphibians, fish and a variety of domestic and exotic animals.

  • Experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.

  • A valid driver’s license is required on date of hire. If an Illinois resident, must possess a valid Illinois driver’s license at the time of hire or must obtain one within 90 days of hire. A valid out-of-state driver’s license is required at time of hire for out-of-state residents.

The preferred qualifications:

  • Two years of college coursework in life sciences preferred.

  • Large audience presentation experience preferred.

  • Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.

Additional Information: This position description summarizes the primary duties and functions of this position, but should not be considered a complete listing of every duty the incumbent may ever be called upon to perform. Interpreters are assigned to work outdoors at a variety of locations along pathways and throughout the Zoo. Incumbent must be open to new experiences. Incumbent must have the ability to work weekends on a regular basis and evenings, and holidays as needed. Local travel may be required.
